About the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant
The Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant is a decommissioned nuclear power plant. It had two RBMK-type reactors, similar to the one that exploded in Chernobyl. The plant was built during the Soviet era and began operation in 1983, providing about 70% of Lithuania's electricity. However, after Lithuania joined the European Union, the plant was deemed unsafe and was shut down in 2009. The decommissioning process began in 2010 and is expected to take several decades to complete. The plant's closure had a significant impact on Lithuania's energy sector and the country is now heavily reliant on imported energy, though plans are in place to turns this around including the development of renewable energy. The INPP decommissioning is set to be completed by 2038.
